Text of the letter (though if you don't follow the link, you won't get to read the snarky comments about how if we want good urban planning and not just endless road-building, we should donate the damn money for crosswalks to the city. Or build them ourselves, or something):
We greatly enjoyed the Ithaca Festival recently, despite the inclement weather. But we were surprised to hear the emcee announce that all three festival venues — downtown, Stewart Park and the Farmers' Market — would be connected by bike path. As avid cyclists, we had to wonder why this wasn't always the case. We occasionally visit the Farmers' Market on weekends, and have a plot at the community garden nearby, but find our travel in that direction impeded by the heavy car traffic and poor signage. Walking is even more difficult, as the intersection of Third Street and Route 13 is nearly impassable on foot: no crosswalk or walk/don't walk sign, and no designated crossing time without turning cars. It's good to see part of this problem remedied during the festival, but wouldn't it be better to solve it year-round?
